Hey. I'm visiting Japan for the second time with my dad, and this time we would like to try a hot spring, but aren't sure where to look, so can we get some recommendations?
now things to consider; we don't speak any Japanese unfortunately. My dad has a tattoo. we will be staying in osaka and tokyo, so looking in those areas. we will have the JR pass so we can go places. and lastly, it can either be just an onsen for an afternoon stay or a ryokan with one for an overnight stay. Thanks :)

Hot springs close to Tokyo are Hakone Onsen and Atami Onsen.
The hot spring near Osaka is Arima Onsen.

Definitely recommend Ryokan with onsen for overnight stay. With kaiseki dinner, multiple dips in the baths, and wonderful breakfast it's a uniquely Japanese experience and may be the highlight of your trip. Sorry, I only know places in Kyushu, can't help with the areas you'll be visiting.
